How To Use
Daily Application:
Step 1 — Cleanse thoroughly
Apply to clean, dry skin after cleansing and toning. Residual makeup, SPF, or cleanser residue reduces penetration of the nano-encapsulated retinal.
Step 2 — Dispense a small amount
A small amount (approximately a 5p coin in size) covers the entire face and neck. The gel-cream formula spreads evenly — avoid applying excess, particularly during the introduction period.
Step 3 — Press gently into the skin
Press rather than rub to encourage absorption and avoid mechanical disruption of the skin surface during the retinal turnover period.
Step 4 — Allow to absorb fully
Allow 60–90 seconds before applying the next step. The liposome delivery system requires brief contact time to initiate membrane fusion.
Step 5 — Apply moisturiser
Follow with a moisturiser to seal the formula and support the barrier lipid complex. A ceramide-rich moisturiser is ideal — consider pairing with COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream for maximum barrier support during the introduction period.
Step 6 — Always apply SPF in the morning
Retinal — like all retinoids — increases photosensitivity. Daily SPF 30+ is non-negotiable on any morning following evening retinal use. This is not optional guidance: UV exposure on retinal-treated skin accelerates exactly the kind of free radical damage the formula is working to reverse.
Key Benefits
Retinal — Not Retinol — at a Meaningful 200ppm Dose
The distinction between retinol and retinal matters enormously at the skin cell level. Retinol needs two enzymatic conversions to become active retinoic acid; retinal needs one. That difference in conversion efficiency is why retinal at 200ppm can outperform retinol at far higher concentrations — and why the irritation profile at 200ppm nano-encapsulated retinal is significantly more manageable than equivalent-efficacy retinol concentrations. This is genuine next-generation retinoid science, not a marketing repositioning of the same active.
LDH Nano-Encapsulation + Multi-Liposome Delivery — The Technology Behind the Tolerance
Most retinal serums that cause irritation do so because the unencapsulated active creates a high-concentration surface exposure as it penetrates. LDH nano-encapsulation wraps the Retinal in a lipid shell that matches the skin's own lipid composition — the shell bypasses surface irritation receptors and delivers Retinal directly to skin cells via membrane fusion. The multi-liposome system distributes this delivery evenly across the entire treated surface. The result is the efficacy of retinal without the barrier disruption that makes most retinoid serums a compromise between results and tolerance.
Eight Peptides Including Copper Tripeptide-1 — Clinical-Grade Collagen Support
The inclusion of Copper Tripeptide-1 (GHK-Cu) alongside Matrixyl (Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4), Argireline (Acetyl Hexapeptide-8), and five additional collagen and elastin-signalling peptides represents a peptide investment that is genuinely uncommon at this price point. GHK-Cu has been studied in peer-reviewed dermatology research for its collagen-remodelling, wound-healing, and anti-ageing efficacy — it is an active that appears in clinical-grade and premium-priced serums far above the Booster Shot's price positioning. Eight peptides in concert with Retinal, Bakuchiol, and Adenosine means this formula is addressing skin ageing through every major pathway simultaneously.
Built-In Irritation Management — Bakuchiol + Ectoin + Centella + Ceramide Complex
Most retinal serums require separate supporting products to manage the sensitivity they cause — a ceramide moisturiser, a barrier serum, an anti-inflammatory toner. The Retinal Booster Shot includes all of these functions within the formula itself: Bakuchiol moderates retinoid inflammatory signalling; Ectoin provides osmotic stress protection and pollution defence; Centella Asiatica directly suppresses NF-κB inflammatory pathways; and the triple barrier lipid complex (Ceramide NP + Cholesterol + Glycosphingolipids) maintains the lipid matrix throughout the cell turnover cycle. For UK skin that has historically found retinoids too irritating to sustain, this built-in support stack is the difference between a product that gets abandoned in week two and one that delivers the 12-week results.
Fragrance-Free, No Harsh Alcohols, No Silicones — Genuine Sensitivity-First Formulation
Retinal is a potent active — pairing it with fragrance, denatured alcohols, or silicones (which can trap retinal-irritated skin under an occlusive barrier) is a formulation choice that undermines the tolerance-first design. Arencia's clean formulation commitment means the irritation-reduction work done by Bakuchiol, Ectoin, and Centella is not being counteracted by unnecessary inflammatory triggers elsewhere in the formula.
Skin Type
All skin types. Especially beneficial for ageing, textured, dull, and post-acne skin. Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Introduce gradually — begin every other day for the first 2 weeks.
Ingredients
Retinal (Retinaldehyde) — 200ppm, LDH Nano-Encapsulated — Retinal is the aldehyde form of Vitamin A sitting directly one conversion step above retinoic acid in the Vitamin A metabolism pathway — compared to retinol, which sits two steps above. This single conversion difference makes Retinal significantly more potent and faster-acting per unit of concentration than retinol: studies suggest Retinal can be up to 11 times more effective than retinol at equivalent concentrations. At 200ppm, this is a genuinely active dose that produces visible skin renewal. The LDH (Lipid Drug Hybrid) nano-encapsulation technology encloses the Retinal molecules within a lipid shell matched in composition to the skin's own lipid barrier — enabling the active to penetrate cell membranes with exceptional efficiency while the controlled-release mechanism prevents the sudden high-concentration exposure that causes retinoid dermatitis, peeling, and barrier disruption. The multi-liposome delivery system works in parallel — further distributing the Retinal evenly across the skin surface for uniform renewal rather than the patchy irritation that can occur with unencapsulated retinoid application
✦ Bakuchiol — A plant-derived antioxidant from Psoralea corylifolia seeds that has been independently studied for its ability to upregulate the same collagen-stimulating genes as retinol, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity — without the irritation, photosensitivity, or barrier disruption associated with retinoids. In this formula, Bakuchiol serves a dual function: as a retinal synergist that amplifies and extends the Vitamin A skin-renewal activity through a complementary non-retinoid pathway; and as an irritation buffer that actively moderates the inflammatory response the skin can mount when first encountering retinal. The combination of nano-encapsulated Retinal with Bakuchiol represents a significantly more effective and more comfortable retinal experience than either ingredient could deliver alone
✦ Caffeine — A well-researched skincare active with multiple relevant mechanisms in a retinal formula. Caffeine is a potent antioxidant that neutralises free radicals generated by metabolic and environmental stress; a vasoconstrictor that reduces under-eye puffiness and facial redness; and an adenosine receptor antagonist that stimulates microcirculation and energises dull, fatigued skin. In a retinal serum, Caffeine's anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive properties are particularly valuable — directly counteracting the erythema and redness that retinoid-naïve skin can experience during the adjustment period, while its antioxidant activity protects the Retinal molecule itself from oxidative degradation during storage and after application
✦ Ectoin — One of the most thoroughly researched multi-functional active ingredients in modern cosmetic formulation. An extremolyte — a stress-protection molecule produced naturally by microorganisms surviving extreme conditions — Ectoin forms a hydration shell around skin cells, proteins, and enzymes that protects them from osmotic stress, temperature fluctuation, UV radiation, and pollution-induced damage. In a retinal serum, Ectoin's role is critical: it provides dual-action pollution protection (both protecting against further damage and helping repair existing damage); maintains barrier hydration during the skin cell turnover acceleration that retinal triggers; and calms the inflammatory signals that create retinoid sensitivity. Ectoin is highly stable across the pH range of 1–9 and is unaffected by light, oxygen, and temperature — making it an ideal stabilising co-active in a retinal formula
✦ Eight-Peptide Complex — The most ambitious peptide investment in the Arencia Booster Shot range:
Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 (Matrixyl) — One of the most extensively studied cosmetic peptides. Stimulates collagen I, III, and IV synthesis and fibronectin production — directly rebuilding the dermal matrix that gives skin its firmness and structure
Copper Tripeptide-1 (GHK-Cu) — The most biologically active copper peptide in skincare. Stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis, promotes wound healing and barrier repair, has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and has been studied for its ability to remodel scar tissue and photoaged skin. The combination of Copper Tripeptide-1 with Retinal creates a collagen-stimulation synergy that addresses skin ageing through both Vitamin A remodelling and copper-mediated matrix synthesis simultaneously
Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 (Argireline) — A neuropeptide that inhibits the neuromuscular junction signalling responsible for repetitive facial muscle contractions — reducing the appearance of expression lines at the forehead, eye corners, and between the brows
Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 + Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 — Collagen-stimulating signal peptides that work synergistically with Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 to activate TGF-β pathway collagen production
Hexapeptide-2, Hexapeptide-9, Tripeptide-1, Pentapeptide-3 — Supporting peptides delivering additional firmness, brightening, and skin-renewal signalling across multiple dermal pathways
✦ Ceramide NP + Cholesterol + Glycosphingolipids — The complete barrier lipid complex. Ceramides, Cholesterol, and Sphingolipids are the three structural lipid classes that comprise the skin's natural barrier matrix in approximately a 1:1:1 ratio in healthy skin. Retinal accelerates cellular turnover — which can transiently disrupt the barrier and increase transepidermal water loss. The inclusion of all three barrier lipid classes directly replaces what retinal-accelerated turnover temporarily removes, maintaining barrier integrity and hydration throughout the skin renewal cycle and preventing the tight, flaky, sensitised skin that poorly formulated retinoid products produce
✦ Centella Asiatica Extract — The gold-standard anti-inflammatory and barrier-healing botanical for retinoid support. Centella's Asiaticoside and Madecassoside compounds directly suppress the NF-κB inflammatory pathway that produces retinoid dermatitis — calming redness and sensitivity at the molecular level while its barrier-repair compounds support the skin's own recovery processes during the overnight renewal period
✦ Niacinamide — Multi-tasking in a retinal formula: brightening (melanin transfer blockade), barrier strengthening (ceramide synthesis stimulation), sebum regulation, pore refinement, and anti-inflammatory. Niacinamide's barrier-strengthening activity is directly complementary to the ceramide complex — the two work in concert to maintain barrier integrity during retinal-driven cell turnover
✦ Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil + Hydrogenated Lecithin — The emollient delivery system that carries the nano-encapsulated Retinal and lipid-soluble actives into the skin. Macadamia Oil has a fatty acid profile uniquely similar to human sebum (particularly rich in palmitoleic acid, which declines significantly with age), absorbing rapidly and non-greasing while actively nourishing the barrier. Hydrogenated Lecithin is the phospholipid backbone of the multi-liposome delivery technology — its structure mirrors the phospholipid bilayer of cell membranes, enabling the liposome carriers to fuse with and deliver actives directly across the cellular membrane
✦ Brassica Campestris (Rapeseed) Sterols — Plant sterols that strengthen the skin barrier by integrating into the lipid matrix between skin cells, reducing transepidermal water loss, and providing anti-inflammatory activity — a further barrier-support layer on top of the ceramide complex
✦ Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate — A highly stable, oil-soluble antioxidant used specifically to protect the Retinal molecule from oxidative degradation within the formula — maintaining the active's potency from opening to last use. The inclusion of this specialist retinal stabiliser alongside Tocopherol and Caffeine indicates formulation attention to the single biggest challenge in retinal product development: keeping the active stable and effective throughout the product's shelf life
FAQ'S
